Out and About during the Macon Film Festival

So, I decided to impromptu-ly set up my laptop down here at The Douglass and blog from the Macon Film Festival.

If you have not come down here- get your sorry butts down here. I mean it! There are some amazing films being shown. I got to meet the director of one of the student entries and I swear to you this girl will be shown on "the big screen" some day. And yesterday I got to meet Crystal Chappell, some of you may remember her as Olivia from The Guiding Light. Today I got to meet some more directors- even one really cute one from Italy.

Just a moment ago I spoke to Jon Lindstrom, director of "How We Got Away With It"- to be screened later tonight. He's so nice! And speaks so highly of our festival, saying we are "very filmmaker friendly". He also just gave me permission to say "Jon Lindstrom highly recommends the Macon Film Festival".

So look- get your behinds down here asap... you still have time!

Just an Ordinary Weekend and the Macon Civic Club Show

So, I haven't been on here in a while cause I really haven't had a whole lot going on- aside from school, a new job, being on the Macon Arts Alliance committee for Fired Works... yeah, I guess I do still have a lot going on.

But I haven't really been out and about like I usually would, not since New Year's and First Friday. This past weekend was just simply amazing, and I definitely did not go anywhere. But let me tell you how a day of nothing can turn in to something: you have to keep your mind open. For instance, my mom needed to go to Wal Mart, so I dropped her off at the door and my sweet babies were in the back seat. At the entrance to Wal Mart were about a dozen young men and women in uniform, asking for donations. So, I gave my babies a dollar each to give to them and asked who they were with: Crawford County High School ROTC. They just loved being able to help out! Then as I took the long way through the parking lot to Chic Fil A for their lunch, we pulled up next to a firetruck. They LOVE firetrucks! So I rolled down the windows and my kids waved and waved and waved! The firefighters were so nice- they beeped the horns and turned on the sirens and waved back. Then, on to Chic Fil A and back to Wal Mart. After we ate, we went over to the soccer fields at Stratford. My mom is a teacher there so it was no problem- my kids ran and ran and RAN. Then I showed them how to roll on their sides down the hill. Got all kinds of dried grass all over us but I didn't care. It was a good reminder it's the simple things that can make us happiest.

While this past weekend was about the simple things, I do love a good black tie affair and this upcoming weekend is the perfect one: the Macon Civic Club's Rollin' On the River. Be sure to check out my other blog, Make It Work Molly, for details about what I will be wearing ;) If you have never been to this show I promise you do NOT want to miss it. I will be at the Friday night black tie event, which is only $40/person and includes the pre show cocktail party, but other nights are as inexpensive at $18/person. Each evening's performance will benefit a different Middle Georgia charity, and of course yall know I can't say "no" to charities. And I really can't say "no" to seeing people I have grown up with making fun of themselves on stage- after all, the best kind of humor is self deprecating- correct?

Afterwards- be sure to enjoy the night out in downtown Macon! Perhaps cocktails at Kashmir, downtown grill or even Dovetail? Where will I see you?

So Much To Do, See, and Live in Downtown Macon

I love Macon. I really, really love Downtown though. This past weekend was First Friday- my evening started off meeting a certain someone at downtown grill before heading up to Thomas Sanders first solo show at Macon Arts Alliance. I have to say it was SO refreshing to see a bunch of people who I don't usually see out downtown out and about. But- first the show.

Thomas is an incredibly talented artist and if you have not made it down there yet you really should make the effort to go.

I saw a ton of people there as usual: Betsy and Keith Fitzgerald, Carey Pickard and Chris Howard, Lauren Benedict, Chloe Meadors, Ansley Morris, Collin Holder, Canaan Marshall, Steven Fulbright and David Quakenbush and more. The night would continue at Tic Toc Room where we ran into Canaan again, and then over to Dovetail where we had what HAD to be the best flippin salmon of my life. No joke yall it was unreal. And Wayne made up a cocktail for me. It had in it Grey Goose, Chambord, Grand Marnier, Creme de Mure garnished with a flamed orange peel- I gotta be honest anytime my drink is lit on fire you've gotten my attention. And I need to ask Roger Riddle about the sides with that salmon: some kind of rice and peas. Off the charts just damn good.

I was happy to get the chance to catch up with Chloe and Ansley at Dovetail also- I hadn't really seen Chloe since we both joined Junior League and Ansley is an old friend from Stratford, middle school days. (And she had on THE cutest top from The Blue Door Boutique in Columbus.)

Now, as much as I love downtown I have been keeping my eyes open for a place to live down here. It's really difficult to keep track of the different places and possibilities especially with homes owned by a single person or smaller groups along with the "bigger" places. Luckily, there is now livedowntownmacon.com - which makes it SO much easier to find a place to live. I spoke with Kris Hattaway about it as well:

Molly:  Can you tell me, what initiated this website?

Kris: NewTown Macon has had the livedowntownmacon.com website for several years.  In its earliest form, it was a listing of all the rental properties that you could rent in downtown Macon.  So, if you were wanting to live downtown and looking for an apartment, this site would give you all the contact information to call around and see if anything was available.  This past summer we gave the website an overhaul and reworked it to better meet the needs of the potential residents for downtown.  The site still lists all the rental properties in downtown [under Places to Live] which shows that we have a lot of rental properties downtown, but now the main purpose of the site is to list the properties that are available right now! These are under Featured Listings and are highlighted in a rotating box on the home page.

In 2011 we updated a 2008 residential market study that told us we could fill 235 new housing units [houses, lofts, apartments] each year for five years.  Now, that includes rental and owner-occupied units, but the demand is great! NewTown gets call every week of people looking to move downtown.  This website is a great tool to assist people in their downtown living search.

NewTown is currently managing a $5 million bond fund from the Development Authority of Bibb County - thanks to Bibb County - to provide gap financing for residential projects downtown.  We have used those funds in the Cotton Avenue Lofts that added 6 units to downtown and were rented before completion.  We're also using those funds to assist with the Dannenberg Lofts which will start renting in the first quarter of 2013 adding 69 lofts and three new retail spaces.  The third project the funds are being used for are the Lofts at 401 Cherry Street that will add 20 furnished lofts to downtown.  Our hope is that the Central Georgia community will become accustomed to going to the website to check on availabilities that it will help with filling the new units that are coming online in 2013.

This is a very cool site, it looks like it's open for both private listings as well as larger commercial ones. Do people with properties need to pay to have their properties listed?

On the site you can find listings for apartments in divided houses, lofts above street retail, as well as units in large complexes such as Katherine Court.  The site is currently complimentary to property owners with units in downtown Macon.

About how many people do you reach through this site? How long has it been up?

The newly revamped site has been live since NewTown's Annual Meeting on October 17th.   A complete marketing plan will kick off in January with a focus on March - May, so be on the look out for more to come!

Where do you see the growth of residential space downtown going? Who is your target audience?

Much (if not most) of our street level retail spaces have upstairs floors that are either not being used or are not built our for lofts, but that is the perfect use of that space. NewTown has just entered into our third phase of revitalization for downtown.  With this new phase, we have identified three target blocks where we will focus our work. The first target block is bordered by Cherry, Third, Poplar, and Second.  The second target block is bordered by Poplar, Third, Plum, and Second.  The third target block is bordered by Third, Cherry, MLK, and Poplar. Our strategic plan can be found on our website -  http://www.newtownmacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/NTM_StrategicActionPlan_FINAL.pdf

The lofts that are being built at this time are just the beginning of the influx in residential units downtown.  We expect to see more and more upper floors of our downtown buildings being renovated and used for lofts.

The Volk Study done in 2008 and updated in 2011 tells us that are primary target market is young professionals. The secondary market is empty nesters.

So, as you can tell, there is going to be LOTS of room for all of us who love downtown so much rather soon. And if you can't wait for the new lofts be sure to check out livedowntownmacon.com for all kinds of places available right now.

After all, wouldn't it be nice to be able to walk home after Mulberry Market (I went yesterday!!! LOVE it) or even after an event like Clifford Live! at The Grand Opera House?

Yep- I have one last thing to tell yall about. For anyone who thinks downtown isn't a "family friendly" place you  need to check out the Clifford Live! show- http://www.thegrandmacon.com/clifford-live/. I know I will be taking my kids. They love watching Clifford on PBS and to let them see it up close and personal on stage will be a very special treat for them. I'm super excited to get them introduced to theater early and to go ahead and instill a love for the arts at an early age. They love watching Disney musicals on tv so can you imagine how magical it will be for them to see this in person?

Oh! And before I forget- be sure to come and see me at the Georgia Bridal Bash this Sunday!! I will be hosting the fashion show and would love to see all of you there. This will be a fantastic event for any lady who is a part of a wedding- and there will be a cigar bar and lounge for the guys. Don't miss it!!! (Remember my friend Tori's wedding I have told yall about? She will be there as well- her wedding was amazing.)

It's going to be amazing! All of this is right here in downtown Macon- if you haven't discovered it I promise it's not too late. There are so many cool things happening right now and in the future.

Time to plan for the New Year- New Year's EVE that is!

Christmas was just over and the planning for New Year's Eve began a week ago. There are events and things to do all over town- frankly it's a good problem to have, having a hard time choosing which events to go to. But I will for SURE be downtown- all kinds of restaurants are having special dinners. Lemongrass and downtown grill and Dovetail for sure, and Kashmir will have a New Year's Eve Masquerade (but be sure to get your tickets in advance)! There will also be the Cherry Blossom Ball Drop and the ARC will have their annual ball at the Terminal Station.

My head is spinning already! How will we ever decide? And to top it off I am still debating outfits (would you expect anything less).

This I can tell you: we will eating at Dovetail this evening. Below is the menu according to the email they sent out:

The first course is an Amuse Bouch and is served with a glass of champagne. You get a choice of four different options with your appetizer and entree. To finish the meal Pastry Chef, Ashley Dunn, has prepared a dessert trio. You get to taste all three! It's going to be a night full of fun and flavor!

Appetizer
Choose One:
Pecan Smoked Corn Chowder - paprika biscotti, buttermilk creme fraiche

This wonderful New Year's Meal is $85 per person. Spots for this special dinner have been filling up quickly since it was first announced. So, we suggest you make your reservations as quickly as possible.
We look forward to dining with you on New Year's Eve at Dovetail.

I know yall are jealous ;) But there are a bunch of places offering special menus- I mentioned Lemongrass above but I believe Tic Toc is as well and I know downtown grill is. Afterwards, I'm not sure everything we're doing- I know we're going to Cox Capitol Theatre and Kashmir. What are your plans? I know one thing is for sure- it's gonna be a fantastic night with all of my wonderful friends! 2012 has been fantastic and 2013 will be even better.

It's Mid December- Time for Christmas Parties!

Holiday party season! So far I have managed to not totally overwhelm myself. Santa Claus (ie: Me) is finished with my children's Christmas shopping. I still need to wrap up shopping for everyone else. And last weekend kicked off the holiday parties. Perfect timing, really, with the opening of Cesare's newest hot spot: Kashmir. But we'll get to that in a moment...

Our group would first convene at David's house before the Jazz Association's Holiday Jam. When you invite people over, even if you have plenty of cocktails, you have to have food as well. That was my self appointed job. If I didn't have a regular 9-5 job and children I could have time to make appetizer type food, even though I say I can't cook I can make appetizers no problem. But again the problem is time. I do kind of like to get my sleep when I can. So, I made a phone call to Cesare who got me in touch with Mary- who handles all of his private room bookings and caterings. I didn't need a whole lot, just something for around 15 people during cocktails.

I wish I had taken pictures but we had three platters of food from Dolce Vita: cucumber and tomato sandwiches, fruit and cheese, turkey and avacado wraps, and more. They were beautiful and yummy. And a big hit.

From there we went to the Jazz Association's Holiday Jam at the Library Ballroom. The jazz band was amazing! However as per usual for our group we had to make the rounds. From there we stopped by the party in the alley outside of downtown grill before stepping inside. From there we went on to Tic Toc Room- which was packed for the performance by Tokyo Spa. Needless to say, we did not make it to Kashmir that night- we did the next night though- but we did stop by BJ's to tell my brother Happy Birthday.

We wrapped up the evening at David's house- needless to say I have a very fun group of friends. Ending the evening dancing with Ricky (who also had a birthday), Jonathan, Steven, David, Betsy, Keith, Tori, Jerry and David- simply priceless! There are pictures but I probably shouldn't post them.

The next day we tried to make it to Wesleyan Market, but I remembered the closing time wrong so it didn't happen. We did however go by Yesterday's Antique Market. That is one really cool place- I saw the coolest glass ball wall installation.

After that we also went to Payne City Antique Market. That evening we made it over to Dovetail because I had a serious craving for the Sweet Tea creme brulee- we then went to downtown grill but they were so busy we couldn't get it. Hey- it happens- which is honestly a great thing to see. So we went on to Kashmir, where I saw so many old friends especially from my days for working for Cesare: Mary, Paula, Sunshine... and sorority sister Caroline who then introduced me to Catherine- one of the girls working there who is also an ADPi.

And tonight is the Bravo's Christmas party! This is yet another fun group- so don't miss out on any of our fun activities next year. :)

All in all, it was a very fun weekend but I am super excited for this weekend- I already have playdates schedules for my sweet babies.

Also- be sure to check out my latest fashion blog post with my #TheMuseProject photos- more to come:
http://makeitworkmolly.com/themuseproject-take-1/

AND keep your eyes open for my updates regarding the Georgia Bridal Bash- yours truly will be hosting it! It's Sunday, January 13th 2013. It will be epic :) There will be a beauty bar, groom cigar lounge, VIP lounge, detail inspired galleries, fashion show, prizes and of course Central Georgia's finest wedding professionals.

Til next time yall!

There's a Few Things Worth Staying Up For...

I should be well in bed by now- I have the alarm set well before 6 am to make it to the gym, since someone delayed me this morning. And yet another someone delayed me this evening. So it has  to happen. But- there's something special coming up soon and I need to let yall know about it. So, I am not asleep even though my eyes are halfway there.

The ARC is a group that I first really "met" this time last year, when doing a series of interviews on the MaconScene.com blogging site. Better known as The Advocacy Resource Center, they assist people who family members that help different developmental disabilities in many ways such as finding them homes and helping them to live in the "real world." Since 1953, they have been finding ways to help these people live as independently as they can and have also aided them in reaching their individual rights that many of us take for granted.

The ARC frequently partners with local restaurants for " Eat for the ARC" days, in which a portion of the proceeds go to the ARC. Today's happens to be one of those days at Lemongrass, downtown on Cherry Street. On the 22nd it will be Georgia Bob's.

Their biggest event is the Big Bash, and this year is their fifth one. It happens to be one of THE events to go to New Year's Eve, and tickets start at just $25 per person. From their press release:

“It is exciting to see so many supporters sell out this party to celebrate The Arc, year after year,” exclaimed board member Betsy Powell. Partygoers will appreciate the option to have a general ticket, in addition to the table seating. Beginning at $25, tickets are available now: arcmacon.org or 478.477.7764.

So, do you really want to miss out on any of these events? I think not! Get out today to Lemongrass, on the 22nd to Georgia Bob's and ring in the New Year with the ARC at the Terminal Station- they're even going to have The Grapevine performing! I hope to see each of you there.

I Planned a Relaxing Weekend, However...

... Just curious, did any of you out there actually think this would succeed for me? Well, it's kind of going to happen. For about an hour.

Tomorrow morning, I have offered to help a friend who needs a hat in the morning. So, I may be up around 6 am. And really, I need to go running anyway. I've been missing it a lot since the time change, cause I can't go after work. So, meet friend, go on a run. Then at 11 am I take some time for myself for a massage with Mandy Miller- praise Jesus. I can also nap during the massage ;)

After that it's off to lunch at Lemongrass to meet up with my editors, Gary and Carla, with Macon Food and Culture and then Jittery Joe's to finally get serious about NaNoWriMo- and to meet up with some other ladies who are trying to meet this nearly 2,000/words daily goal (hope to see each of you- Angel, Rachel, Sarah). I'm hoping to also make it to the downtown cleanup that Main Street Macon is hosting- however I may run out of time.

And after THAT it's off my friends Alex and Eleta's house for some pre-Thanksgiving festivities with lots of food and friends. I knew Alex and Eleta both in undergraduate school at Mercer and have gotten to know them both a lot better recently. I am really looking forward to tomorrow night- it's looking to be a good night with lots of friends and cerebral conversation. (I seem to always get in a good, civil, intellectual political conversation with this group and I LOVE it. Good reminder of why I was a poli sci major, I suppose.)

Tomorrow night is also the big Goodwill Gala- I hate I'm going to miss it but since I would be dateless for the evening and the fact that cloning in humans has yet to be perfected... anyone care to send me pictures so I can post them?

As for Sunday? Going to aim for another early morning run, however the recent cold weather may take it all out of me tomorrow morning. Then church- I attend St. Paul's Episcopal but I've been meaning to visit St. James also- it's always nice to check out other houses of worship just for the sake of it. And then... not sure to be honest with you! I feel like there is something I am forgetting (there usually is). Til next time folks...

Missing In Action... Sort Of...

Even as I type this, I am exhausted. I've had to take a bit of a break from the social scene, of course I say that even as I went to the Hay House wine tasting last week and had a short evening out for my birthday last weekend.

This week, I doubt I make it to the Festival of Trees Gala. I really want to but I am simply exhausted. So, anyone out there want to take some pictures for me? I feel like I am letting down my friend Canaan- one of the brilliant minds behind this event. Anything Canaan touches turns to gold- so when you add in people like Susannah Maddux and Bowen Reichert- this is a no way to fail event. It'll be nothing short of simply fabulous. But I have the trump card, the one thing that could top any possible event: a night with my sweet babies. So as much as I hate to miss this, I know I'll be having more fun. (No offense!!)

So, what are yall doing after the event? It happens at the Terminal Station- so may I suggest grabbing dinner afterwards? Or at least a cocktail or two. You're only a walk away from Tic Toc and other places!

This weekend... I know there's a lot going on but my brain is a bit fried at the moment. Feel free to remind me here of your events! Right now- I'm about to call Chantelle at Amanda Jane or Mandy Miller to see if there is a miracle opening for either of their massage tables this weekend.... I might have to be missing in action this weekend.

OH before I forget!!! Tomorrow: from noon til 5:30. be sure to make a donation at one of the new donation stations downtown. This is a project from the 2012 Leadership Macon class. I first saw stations like these in Athens when I was a student, and they are an amazing way to really help the homeless. I'm sure each of you has seen a homeless person and perhaps wanted to help but maybe were scared or even resentful- thinking they would spend the money on addictions. THIS program allows you to give change, or even charge you card, which will then go to the Macon Coalition to End Homelessness. The ribbon cutting is at 2:30. This is a real chance to impact others who need our help, and I am so proud to call many of the people in this Leadership class as my friends.

Cheers!

EDIT: Oh my gosh I can't believe I forgot to add what all I did yesterday! First was the new organization of the Young Professionals Network through the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce. I was so happy to see so many people I already knew and to meet even more new people. I look forward to more events!

After that was our Junior League of Macon membership meeting. I always love seeing these ladies, and I especially enjoyed catching up with Kristen, Stephanie, Christine, Tori, Jessica, Amber, Suzanne and many more! I always love to see my League ladies- and it's even better that so many of my ADPi alums are in it too :)

Dovetail, Macon Symphony and Many More Projects

Well, I haven’t been so good about updating this lately, mainly because I have just been exhausted. There’s quite a bit of stuff coming up, including Tap Dogs and Cirque Mechanics at The Grand Opera House this weekend. There is also the Wine Tasting event at The Hay House, always a lovely event- I think I will make this there this week.

Yesterday still managed to be a full day, even though I TOTALLY slept in and missed my appointment to get my fill ins done on my eyelashes at The Lily Room in Bonaire (see this post for more info: http://makeitworkmolly.com/lashes-lashes-gimme-more-lashes/). I then had a photo shoot with Lee McDavid, who I worked for in high school. Hopefully, I’ll have some headshots to show yall soon! We also discussed some project ideas, teaming up with Elizabeth Grimsley of William Alexander Salon. Ohhh we’ve got some pretty cool project ideas- stay tuned! YOU might be called on to help!

After that, I met with Winsphere Jones- local playwright. Yet another project on the horizon… stayed tuned for that as well. Unfortunately, I missed the chance to meet up with friends at Eagle Gun Range. Going to HAVE to make that one up soon!

Last night, I took my mother and my grandmother out on the town. First we went to Dovetail. I had been hearing about it from everyone at work, and of course all of the social media buzz. I have the say- it lived up to the hype. Chris Horne raved about their “Put Ups”- which is a trio of bacon marmalade, lima bean hummus, and pimento cheese along with homemade bread. First- I hate pimento cheese. I like this pimento cheese, and I am pretty sure it’s the same pimento cheese they also serve at The Rookery. Bacon marmalade- I asked our server how they made it and I got a mysterious answer, the only part I understood was that they make it there themselves. It only adds to the mystic. Lima bean hummus:  I consider myself to be a hummus connoiseeur, I eat it everywhere. This had an added, not sweetness but a tanginess- kind of- I struggle to describe it. Suffice it to say this word might do it: yummyness.

Before that my mother and I both ordered one of their signature drinks: the Quarter Horse. It’s kind of like an old fashion, but less sweet. I was rather impressed that my mother would order a bourbon based drink so I jumped along as well. This might need to be my new regular cocktail. It’s made with bourbon, lime juice, ginger beer, Peychaud’s and Angosura.

For my meal I got one of their small plates: the Braised Rabbit Relleno. Mom gave me hell for eating rabbit, but whatevs it was damn good. It’s a charred tomato mole, poblano pepper, and queso fresco with rabbit. The rabbit was somehow stuffed in to the pepper. It was beautiful. Beautiful.

Next we ordered three desserts: the Sweet Tea Crème Brulee, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and I forget the other one- my grandmother ordered it because she’s allergic to eggs and it didn’t have egg in it. Sadly, I didn’t try that one. I looked like enough of a pig eating up the crème brulee and cheesecake with mom. I owe Chris Horne a big thank you for giving me a heads up about the crème brulee. Heaven. Heaven. No lie: heaven. The cheesecake was like pure sin though. OMG.

Ah- but before dessert Wayne and Mary Alice surprised us with complimentary after dinner drinks. Mary Alice is going to get me the descriptions and ingredients, it was all too fabulous and overwhelming for me to remember. A chocolate martini, some kind of blackberry concoction, and a maple something or another. We passed them around among each other, or I’d still be under the table. Wow. If Wayne ever offers to create something and for you to try it, don’t pass him up on it. I’ve been on the receiving end of his experiments before- always with success. EDIT: Here are the drinks-

Chocolate Raspberry Martini
vodka, chambord, port wine, house made chocolate syrup topped with brandied raspberry.
Berries n cream
creme de mur, dark rum, topped with batch made whipped creme drizzled with raspberry liqueur and a brandied black berry
maple creme bumbo : honey rum, Tennessee whiskey, maple creme liqueur, topped with grated nutmeg

Oh also- the chef and manager came by the table and said hello as well. I love when that happens- always a nice touch. It was also nice that they recognized me from my writer's page pic in Macon Food and Culture ;)

And we still had the symphony after this! Somehow I managed to not be in a food coma beforehand. As always, brilliant performance. This time not only did we have the opera of Hansel and Gretel performed, but the Mercer University Children’s Choir made a cameo at the end. It’s so nice to see so many young people involved in this. We have so much culture here- yall need to get out and enjoy it!

I hate to say though, I missed my friend David Quakenbush’s birthday. Happy birthday dear! It’s always a fabulous time with our group, and I hate so much I missed it.

I went to church today, and as always it was a great set of lessons and hymns. Please bear with me a moment as I get a little philosophical. Today’s church was like a moment in which both my early and recent faiths were encompassed all in one service. One of the hymns sung was one of my favorites as a child. Isn’t it funny how simple our faith was as children? So blind and so innocent and so easy. It grows harder to believe the older we get. Life’s trials and adversities cause us to question God’s presence in our lives. And why not? With so many people saying who God is and who He loves and doesn’t love. My God loves everyone- gay or straight, rich or poor. My God also loves those who are persecuted. This has become more relevant to me recently.

Some of you may know that I was recently criticized, and rather publicly so. I have to be honest, it was tremendously hurtful to read the comment from friend’s screen shots sent to me. For someone who doesn’t know me to refer to me as “the scum I wiped off of my feet today” and as a bad mother- I will admit, that hurts. I spent the better part of last Saturday on and off crying about it.

Multiple friends,  bless them, reached out to me in support- pointing out that these people do not even know me. And while this is true, it is not what has comforted me today. Today, the Old Testament reading was from Solomon:
Solomon 3:9
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like a gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble.

Now, perhaps I am interpreting scripture wrong, but for me I realized something today. Yes, these words that were spoken about me were uttered by people who do not know me, and yes I have a TON of people in my corner- and I am thankful for them- but as long as I have my babies and my God they are all I need. God will bring me through whatever I am going through and make me stronger. These past few months  and years have shown me that. My faith is that much stronger and I bless all the adversity I have been through for bringing me here. So for those of you who say such mean things about me, I offer you my prayer and blessing. For one, I know you must be hurting so much yourself to say such mean things. And two, I am grateful to each of you for allowing me to be a stronger Christian, even if I am criticized for my multiple writings and bloggings and goings about town.

This is not to say I will stop writing, on the contrary, God has made me as I am. I strive to be a better person every day, although I know I will never be perfect- as God made us as sinners. God knows my strengths and weaknesses, and knows I am working on being better. I hope I can use my ability to write to let each of you know about the great things here in Macon, I see it as part of my mission in life.

Sorry to get preachy on yall! But life is so great for me right now, I just want yall to know it and I hope I can share in it with each of you.

My love to all of you!

Wrapping Up This Crazy October: Taste of the Arts and More

Ugh! It's almost here- the end of October. Praise Jesus I really wondered if I would survive. I memorized my lines for Spirits in October (barely), went to more events than I can recall, and just finished Taste of the Arts. WOW. First- thank you to everyone who supported all of the charitable events I was a part of, these things cannot take place without you. Second, thank you to David- who was a patient date for most of my events, he was gracious enough to let me drag him around to most everything.

So, how was Taste of the Arts? It was amazing. I'm not sure how much we raised, I'll find out later, but the food was phenominal. I hate I didn't get to try everyone's food though- I'm really hating I missed Riverside Cemetary's chili, especially after working with them so much for Spirits in October. That wrapped up this weekend also, and I will get back to that later.

So anyways. It was a tremendous night. I saw a TON of people: Mr. and Mrs. Beeland, of course (and a big thumbs up to her for taking on the task for Interim Director of the Macon Arts Alliance); Chanda and Kevin Akles; Stephanie Robinson; Colin Holder; Canaan Marshall; Betsy Campbell and Gary Ballard; Molly Muse; David Quakenbush and Stephen Fulbright; Tori and Jerry Jennings- and so so many more. There's no WAY I can remember everyone and I will add yall as I remember. We went out to dinner at Tic Toc afterwards, which was equally amazing. I'm really looking forward to Cesare's new place opening up. He was kind enough to stay open for all of us piling in late.

The next Sunday was also the last night of Spirits in October. It was my absolute honor to play Mary Evans Glass, one of the founders of my sorority: Alpha Delta Pi. Thank you so much to all of you who came out to see us- being able to play this role has allowed me a deeper appreciation for my sorority. For all of you ADPi ladies, I truly feel our motto even more: " We Live For Each Other".

How Does It Feel To Play in a Cemetery?

In case yall were wondering... it was actually really cool. And I get to go again tonight!!! If you want to see me, I will be there after seven tonight. Oh wait, in case you missed prior posts I will be playing Mary Evans Glass- one of the founders of Alpha Delta Pi sorority- in Spirits in October.

If you aren't going tonight, or are going tomorrow or next weekend then be sure to check out St. Paul Episcopal Churches Broadway Night tonight- go here for more info: https://www.facebook.com/events/502215546455906/?fref=ts

If you are needing plans for later on in the evening, feel free to come and find me at The Rookery for DJ Shawty Slim and DJ Roger Riddle tonight- https://www.facebook.com/events/190354861100242/?fref=ts.

Sorry for being lazy and not putting in hyperlinks but hey- it's my blog, I'm allowed.

Now, I can't believe I forgot to mention last time that this weekend we also have Historic Macon's flea market. (https://www.facebook.com/historicmacon?fref=ts) So, my schedule is somewhat amended tomorrow. Flea Market, Arts on Riverdale, Junior League's Rock n Read, Spirits in October.

Just another busy weekend for me!

Meanwhile- check out these pictures, courtesy of Milton Heard, of me playing Mary Evans Glass. Go here for more pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mheardiv/sets/72157631803536178/

Playing the Part: Spirits in October; Jazz and Arts on Riverdale; Junior League's Rock n Read; and Taste of the Arts

Halfway through my crazy month. I got my lines down for Spirits in October- FINALLY. I mean I really think Suzanne Doonan was going to strangle me, cause this time last week... it was iffy. In fact I almost asked if I could keep notecards. BUT- thanks to Weldon, one of my fellow Mary Evans Glass actors, I got it down. And thank you to David to listening to my lines over and over again... and my sweet lil babies for also listening over and over again. (A tip: if you want to memorize lines, fighting talking over and 2 and 3 year old will help.)

So, since my lines are down- yall please come and see me since I am no longer concerned with embarrassing myself. Sound good? Great!

Also this weekend is the Jazz and Arts on Riverdale event. It's an easy walk from my house so I will for sure be there, and frankly Georgia plays Kentucky and I'm just not thrilled at all with how the last game went. So I am not really interested in the other games anymore- for the moment. And the game is at 7- so no excuses there. You can always discover something new here, whether it is a piece of jewelry or art. I know for sure that Karli Campbell of Knot + Bow Designs will be there.

And another family friendly event this weekend is Junior League of Macon's Rock n Read Fest. This is the FIRST year for this event and it's from 4 til 7 with Sterling Waite opening for the SunDollars. Children's activities start at 4 with bouncy houses, face painters, story tellers and SO much more!

So here's my suggestion: start at Arts on Riverdale (it's from 12 til 7), then go to Rock n Read, THEN head to Spirits in October. That's my schedule! DVR the games just in case Georgia decides to show up to play, and run your errands in the morning. That's on Saturday- now on Friday also be sure to attend the Broadway Night at St.Paul's Episcopal Church along with Spirits in October. There will be some surprise special guests from the Macon art's community too!

Now- next weekend. Not only is there Spirits in October but it's also Taste of the Arts. If yall could just click that hyperlink and buy some tickets that would REALLY help me out tons- I'm on the committee and it would be nice if I could help sell a large number of tickets. ;) I have figured out my dress, I just need to find some shoes and book my stylist to do my hair and makeup. I'll fill yall in on THOSE details on my Make It Work Molly blog. It's really going to be an amazing event, my dear friends Tori and Collin are in charge and any party they are a party of is super fabulous- but yall know that from past blog posts.

Ok. I'm exhausted... I'm looking forward to October being done. But I'm sure November and December will bring event more fun stuff with events like Festival of Trees! Til next time yall...

Market Day Market Day- Today is Market Day! Actually, Market WEEK

Yay! Market Day! Today is the day to get down to the Mulberry Street Market- but if you miss it, and even if you don't- you get a double dose of market days this week cause Saturday is Wesleyan Market day. Personally, I love going to these markets. I have my certain people I love to see at each- at Mulberry Market it's Abby Owens and her bread, at Wesleyan Market it's Jonah's on Johnston for their pizza... and also their bread. ( I can hear my friend Collin screaming "Carb-i-cide" BUT I DON'T CARE- I've been running lately). Last week at Mulberry Market, I learned how to cook kale... but I have to be honest, I didn't have the time. (Surprised? Yeah right.) I'm not sure if they are still good so I think I'll just go ahead and buy some more. Since this is my weekend with my babies I'll be sure to make some for them, luckily my lil ones love some leafy greens.

Now- I do need to do some different self promotion. I need some help! Have you registered for DealChicken? Go here: https://www.facebook.com/DealChickenMacon/app_143103275748075?ref=ts or click on the image to the right. And... aside from winning my undying love you will also be entered to win a Kindle Fire. So why not?

Also coming up, the Mercer University Opera has free performances of "The Toy Shop", see the following below from their press release:

Mercer University Opera presents three free performances of the children’s opera “The Toy Shop,” by Seymour Barab. The performances will take place at Neva Langley Fickling Hall of McCorkle Music Building on Mercer University’s campus on Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 18 – 20, at 6 p.m. The opera tells the story of a Toymaker’s two precious creations, two dolls named Paul and Pauline, and an evil magician who tries to steal them away. Bring your little ones to see this charming one-act tale written just for them – and for the child in all of us. Children ages 5 and older are welcome to attend. Although each concert is free, seating is limited, so audience members are encouraged to arrive early. Formore information call (478) 301-5751 or visit Mercer.edu/Music.

Again- you can't say there's nothing to do in Macon! Be sure to also sign the "i love macon" pledge- we'd love to hear about something new you love about Macon. You can also feel free to email me, makeitworkmolly@gmail.com with what you have going on around town.

Til next time yall...

UPDATE: What I bought at the market today- some kale, green beans, Abby Owens' apple bread (btw- if she hadn't held it for me it would be all gone... as of 5:45 pm), and a ridiculous pumpkin/cream cheese concoction

It's Monday: And This Week Wears Me Out Already

Well. For some reason my social calendar isn't giving me a break. As I predicted, October is going to be crazy. I literally have something every weekend.

But September didn't give me much of a break either. This past weekend, I just had to make an appearance at Signature Salon's event to benefit Jay's HOPE. Of course, I couldn't stay as long as I wanted nor go as early as I wanted- you know, being a mommy comes first and I wanted to get the little ones fed, bathed, and tucked in bed first. (Luckily I have great babysitters ie: grandparents.)

Jay's HOPE is one of my favorite local charities. I get my hair styled by Nichole of Signature Salon. And really, I know that any event that Susannah Maddux is a part of will be fantastic. So yeah. This weekend was going to be a big win no matter what! This one was no exception.

Upon walking in we ran in to Rachel Bunn, Kristi Peake, and Janea Phillips- all of Signature Salon. I also saw Ashley Slocumb (by the way-  I still cannot get over her lovely engagement ring), John David and Katie Miller, Nicole Albertson, and Tiffany and Shawn Cannon. (By the way- Tiffany is one of my favorite Junior League ladies, she always makes me laugh!) And of course it was lovely to see Meredith and Nick Malloy.

I have to say, I am not the biggest fan of country music but I did enjoy Cole Swindell's music- even his original music.

Now, things pick right on back up. Tonight is another student led concert at Mercer's Townsend School of Music. Tomorrow- I think is rehearsal for Spirits in October (Jesus help me memorize these lines! Thursday is something I am VERY excited about: the first Idea House by Historic Macon. If you have not purchased tickets yet- then go HERE: https://historicmacon.wufoo.com/forms/z7p6p1/. This is going to be a fun and fabulous event- along with practical! I can't wait to see these ideas for smaller houses.

If you are a writer in town, this weekend also presents the annual Crossroads Writers Conference. I will attend the Saturday afternoon events, after taking care of my super early morning shift for Junior League's Bookin' It 5K & Fun Run. Oh and did I mention Friday? That's First Friday and I have to make it to Heatherly and Eric Wakefield's show The Honeymoons Over?!?, and also there's the show at The Grand Opera House... and then the fundraiser for Macon Symphony Saturday night and also my friend Jerry's birthday AND I have a photo shoot Sunday afternoon. Not to even BEGIN to mention that I am trying to see a house I am interested in this weekend. AHHHHH. Can I please clone myself yet?! And it's the pumpkin patch opening weekend this weekend.

It's Monday. I'm tired already.

Signature for HOPE, Concert with the Mercer Symphony, and i love macon- and you should too!

Well it's another busy week for this lil lady- tomorrow night do NOT miss Signature Salon and Spa's Signature for HOPE event to benefit Jay's HOPE. But why now? Did you know that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month? I don't know about yall, but once I had my babies thinking about this suddenly made it more real to me. If you look up the numbers for childhood cancer, you can find this:

Each year in the U.S. there are approximately 13,400 children between the ages of birth and 19                                  years of age who are diagnosed with cancer. About one in 300 boys and one in 333 girls will develop cancer before their 20th birthday. In 1998, about 2500 died of cancer, thus making cancer the most common cause of death by disease for children and adolescents in America. (http://www.acco.org/Information/AboutChildhoodCancer/ChildhoodCancerStatistics.aspx)

The numbers suddenly seem more real when you think about your own kids, or a child you know, doesn't it? Which brings me to Jay's HOPE- this local organization is here to help families who are dealing with the diagnosis of a child with cancer. I will never forget the first time I heard founder, Cindy Gaskins, speak about why she and her husband started Jay's HOPE. It was my very first Junior League of Macon meeting, and by the end of her talk I was in tears. To this day, I still cannot hear about Baby Jay or read about him and his family without tearing up. To read more, go here: http://www.jayshope.org/the-story-of-jays-hope/ .

However, to focus on the positive. Jay's HOPE is doing so much good and so is Signature Salon by hosting this event:

“I realize how much we are all affected when a child is diagnosed with cancer,
and I am excited to join friends on the [Jay’s HOPE] Young Supporters Board to
support this incredible foundation,” said owner and stylist Nichole Mitchell. After a
successful two years playing host to a community of enthusiastic supporters and
donating over  $7,000 to two local charities,  Signature is  delighted to bring
together friends and other local businesses to gather around Jay’s HOPE
Foundation’s mission to support Georgia families with children battling childhood
cancer (from press release by Goods PR).

This event is not only going to benefit such a great cause but it's going to be a lot of fun too! The event entry comes with a raffle ticket and it's just $10 for one or $25 for three. Cole Swindell will be playing and really- let's be honest everyone is going to be there so you should too! I expect to see each of you there ;)

Now as for a couple of nights ago, I joined friends Betsy and Keith Fitzgerald and Collin Holder at the Mercer Symphony. It was damn near a full house too! I'm so happy to see Macon support live music, and it was a lovely performance. Congrats to all involved and I am looking forward to going to more of these events. There is just nothing like seeing and hearing music in person.

(Apparently I was not supposed to video tape... I swear I didn't see it in the program until after I had already done it... whoops.)

With so much great things happening in Macon, have you signed the  i love macon pledge? If you have not- shame on you. But it's ok because it's not too late! We are half way to the goal of 10,000 pledges. It's so easy just go to the website and write what you love about Macon. It's time we all started being more positive about the change in our town. And of course, sometimes we must be the change we wish to see in this world. And you can start right now by signing this pledge- by simply being positive about this town in which we live.

Macon Symphony Opening Night and Historic Macon's Idea House

This weekend presents a large conundrum for me. I really want to go to the Macon Symphony’s opening night , and I am planning on it. But how am I going to also watch the UGA game? I haven’t figured that out yet BUT for those of you who know me, the fact that I am even debating missing the Georgia game should let you know how excited I am about the symphony. It’s been a couple of years since I have been, and it seems something kept preventing me last year however THIS weekend my babies are with their father so I am going to the Symphony.

I’m not sure just how dressed up most people get here for the Symphony, I know it’s not exactly the opening of the Met (Metropolitan Opera of New York) but I love to dress up for any occasion. Right now I think it’s between a black dress with a plunging neckline or a green dress that Kourtney Kardashian was photographed in (but hers was blue).

The three pieces being performed by the symphony will be:

Stauss- Don Juan
Beethoven- Triple Concerto
and Tchaikovsky- Symphony No. 5 (see YouTube link below for example)

Even if you are familiar with these songs, there is simply nothing like seeing a live performance. Besides, don’t we want to give the new conductor a warm welcome to Macon? Perhaps you weren’t aware, but we do have a new conductor in town: Maestro Ward Stare, who has had nothing but glowing reviews through the various publications I have skimmed online.

As for other goings on in Macon, be sure to go ahead and pick up your tickets for Historic Macon’s Idea House- many of you are aware of the Decorator’s Showcase, however this event will focus on smaller spaces.  To quote Heather Moore:

The Idea House will involve a group of local decorators under 40, who will decorate and stage one of Historic Macon's recent rehabilitated homes in Beall's Hill.  The decorators are encouraged to use affordable furnishings, showcase DIY techniques, and include pieces from Historic Macon's Flea Market.  The home will be open for tours for 2 weekends, where visitors can get inspiration for their own homes, and learn more about the benefits of small-space living.  To kick off the event, we will be hosting a Preview Party where you can get the "first look" at the home.

The designers include in this event are:

                        Martha Maxwell
                        Canaan Marshall
                        Andrea Crawford
                        Carrie Robinson
                        Betsy Campbell
                        Kim Bonner
                        Merritt Jones
                       Ashley Smith

Tickets are now available online by going to https://historicmacon.wufoo.com/forms/z7p6p1/.

So, in conclusion, I will see you at both the Macon Symphony this weekend and the Historic Macon Idea House, right? Right!

The Roaring 20's Revisits the Wise Blood House: A Birthday Soiree

This weekend was one spent with my children, but when I received an invitation from Leila Regan-Porter to her birthday party, I knew I could not miss it. Not only that- but I also skipped watching the Georgia game- and for those of you who know me, you know this is huge. (Granted, they were playing Florida Atlantic but still...)

When we first walked in the door we ran in to Chris Howard, carrying this lovely fur coat. I did not have the chance to ask what type of fur and it probably would have been in poor taste to do so- but I did think about it.

Shortly after arriving we ran in to Jodi and James Palmer, who we had just seen at downtown grill with Joe and Evelyn Adams (who also attended the party). I always enjoy speaking with Jodi, perhaps it is because I have written for their publication, Macon Magazine, but really I think it is because she is one of those people who can carry a conversation with most anyone. That's a rather rare talent, and it takes work.

And to get a little sidetracked- if you are not familiar with Joe Adams' artwork, you need to be. I love abstract artwork and his is some of my favorite.

This type of party is one of my favorites, not just because the theme was carried to the 9's complete with gin filled tea cups and a thesaurus of 1920's lingo, but because of the ecletic mix of people. I always love to run in to friends from all different circles at one event, such as Stacey Harwell (former ADPi sister, minister at Centenary Church and girlfriend to Jonathan Dye), Eleta and Alex Morrison (we go back to our days at Mercer), Betsy Fitzgerald and Canaan Marshall (two of my frequent social companions), Marla Kaplan- who I once had an art class with at Stratford and apparently worked with Leila in Atlanta, Carly Carden- who I swear I am always running in to, and Carey Pickard- who let's be honest, it isn't a real party unless he is there. I even got to meet new people, such as Liz Fabian- although in a strange way, she didn't seem to be a new acquaintance given her long standing in the local news community- Harold Goodridge, who I believe I have met before and is also serving as a volunteer with Spirits in October with me- and Cory Albertson, who I learned was the person to introduce Tim and Leila, as he was an intern at Paste Magazine and when he left said internship insisted that Leila take his place.

The view from the main room we were in was simply amazing- but even more so on this upper deck that we were on at one point. This was when I learned from Steve and Laura Bell about the wild chickens in his hometown of Fitzgerald- really that doesn't sound like as random of a conversation as it seems. Although I can't exactly remember how it came about. It was upstairs that I ran in to John Buckner, yet another Mercer acquaintance.

Sarah Gerwig I think had the best flapper dress there, mainly because of the lovely blue color but I also appreciated her wig- as I was wearing one also ;)

We also ran into Sherrie Marshall, who was my editor when I wrote for The Telegraph, and I have to say it's always nice to run in to someone who you have worked with previously in a more social setting. I always enjoy reading her editorials, so it was also nice to get to speak with her one on one.

I'll also admit to a geek moment, when I noticed that there was a signed guitar on the mantle and I actually recognized one of the bands: Ponderosa. You see, an ADPi sister of mine is married to one of the band members. So of course I had to say something to Tim. Yep. I was that person. But that's ok, I generally am.

But back to the topic at hand- it was a lovely party and I am so thankful to Tim and Leila Regan-Porter for being such lovely hosts! Oh, and if you are curious about the blog title- to explain a bit: the movie Wise Blood (from the book of the same name by Flannery O'Connor) had some scenes filmed in the house, as I have learned- and now so have you.

The White Party: Who, Where, When, Why and What I Decided to Wear

For those of you who read my fashion blog, Make It Work Molly, or even saw my Tumblr page or Instragram photos, you might remember an assuage of white dresses being displayed. These were some of the many options I went through for Tori and Jerry Jennings' White Party- held annually for Tori's birthday. The anticipation had been building for sometime for this event, as I heard stories about how fantastic it was the year before. And of course I know that any event Tori and Jerry have anything to do with will be amazing. Their wedding was like nothing I had ever seen, of course the most important part being seeing two people so much in love with one another pledging their lives to each other.

Forgive me for being somewhat sentimental, but really watching these two together whether it be an evening after work or one of their phenomenal events is something special to me. Anyone who is ever around them can tell how truly dedicated they are to each other. I pray that anyone I know can find that kind of love.

The love they have for one another resonates even through their parties. The both of them are so giving that they want to share everything with their friends. So much so that I am not sure even Tori or Jerry knows exactly how many people they invited to their soiree.

David and I met up with friends Matt and Evah beforehand and rode out to Tori and Jerry's home together. (A side note: if you are ever around myself and Evah together we will usually break in to some kind of story about a mutual former employer. I will not name said former employer except to say that our stories usually revolve around pre paid debit cards and repos.)

Upon arriving we first saw Mrs. Betty Ann Jennings, Jerry's mother, I have to say this lady is so special to me because she has worked with my mother for years at Stratford and was really there for us during a personal situation. This lady has a genuine heart of gold- there are not many out there like her. Once walking in Tori and Melissa (Boren) and Donna (Jennings) were putting out various food items and utensils. In typical Southern lady form I asked if there was anything I could do, was given a small task, and then I stood and watched as these very capable ladies finished up. It was at this point that I decided it was best if I joined David, Matt, and Evah outside. We would eventually make our way to watch the Alabama game. (Is there even any need in mentioning Michigan? After all they seem to not make it to the game.)

And of course we saw a ton of people included (but not limited to): Jonathan Andre, Ricky Hale, Canaan Marshall, Drew Jennings, Ned and Priscilla Esser, Coy Gregory, Elizabeth Evans, Al DeGraw, Stephanie Robinson and her boyfriend Andre, Chanda and Kevin Akles, David Quakenbush, Stephen Fulbright, Melissa and Beau Boren (and her cousin Jessica visiting from England), Jessica White, Blair and Brandon Melton, Amy Thomas, Katie Walden, Paul Griffin and Vickie, Misty and Scott Kiernan, April Moulton Beale and Alvin Beale, Bart Campione and his girlfriend Den, Travis Clark and Lindsey Hubbard.

And as always when I am around Tori I meet someone new who I am thankful for meeting: I must beg forgiveness as I cannot remember this young lady's name but she did introduce herself to me. Apparently we both share a die hard love of Fountain of Juice and she had seen me there before. She is Tori's massuese and also cleans her home occasionally. Of course I had to ask her to please get her contact info to me through Tori- perhaps I can blog about her massages sometime? EDIT- Susie is her name! Lord help me...

I do need to add the flowers from Petals Flowers and More were simply amazing- as was the cake and all of the food. (I need to get the name of who made that cake! Wow!)

I also have to thank Stephen and David for giving us a ride home- I never ever advocate driving even after one drink (if nothing else you might end up in Cuffed or another one of those publications- yikes!). We discussed going out and dancing downtown, it's probably a good thing we did not as I had forgotten it was Boys Bid Day at Mercer. Probably most everything was rented out however I would hope having been a former KA Rose and Lambda Chi Alpha Crescent Court member could potentially still carry a little weight. (Maybe- I say this tongue in cheek.)

I will say, the most fun part of the evening was the most unexpected. Sometimes, dancing in one's own living room like a moron with noone watching can be more fun than anything else.

This being said... I do love an excuse to also get dressed up and go out.... check out my Make It Work Molly to see what I wore!

Til next time folks... gotta get ready to go. Going to try and make it to The 3rd Annual VNA (Vineville Neighborhood Association) Labor Day Wine and Music Festival to see Abby Owens perform. And then off to see Ned and Priscilla Esser!
